The optimal ratio of macronutrients for weight loss is currently much discussed. The purpose of this review was to assess the scientific evidence more consistently about the composition of the diet as a modulator of energy expenditure. In May 2011 we carried out a systematic review of randomized clinical trials in the database Pubmed and Bireme. We indentified thirteen studies which consider the characteristics elected. All studies that compared the themogenic power of high-protein diet showed significant results, however was not elucidated the mechanism responsible for the finding. It should be not that high-protein diet, are not encouraged for a indefinite period, possibly because it can have side made on renal function and calcium excretion and serum lipid levels. There is evidence that high-protein diet increases the dietary induced themogenesis, however, it is important to interpret carefully the results presented in view of the limitations and number of selected studies.
