This dissertation was developed within the context of television audiovisualism studies, which are part of the Visual and Media Processes Research Line of the Graduate Program on Communications Sciences of Unisinos. Its purpose was to investigate a concept that I have named publicitary, here understood as a characteristic that goes beyond the classical definitions of commercial advertising and audiovisualism. This publicitary quality, defined as a component of the audiovisual fabric within televisual dimensions, becomes perceivable to the viewer at different levels of intensity along the flow of TV sounds and images. Television’s publicitary quality is found in the ads that are broadcast during commercial breaks, but is not limited to them. It is articulated through language, discourse and flow in jingles, promos, product placement and when the media advertise themselves, as well as in sports and news programs, soap operas and shows, among others. The term publicitary is defined, in this dissertation, as a doNenhuma
