This study identifies and describes the characteristics of the public and private existences of the white woman native of Porto Alegre through the investigation of the divorce processes from 1774 and 1887, registered in the Metropolitan Curia of Porto Alegre. It was used the method of documental exploratory research, analyzing registers of chroniclers and travelers, divorce processes and the available bibliography of this study field. It was noticed that the passive woman's stereotype, submissive gave up space, gradually, to characters feeling like suffering with the roughness of a denied request of divorce. Tired of being hit, betrayed and seeing their patrimony dilapidated by interests of their peers, those women are described in processes of divorce investigated and in travelers' registrations as: determined, occupying places reserved to them and defending their own and their family interests.
