Using neuropsychological tests with clients from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds is challenging because most tests were designed for use with specific populations. This chapter discusses three options to address this issue; namely, adapting existing tests, developing local tests, or designing cross-cultural tests (CCTs). Each approach is carefully analyzed considering its advantages and disadvantages. It is concluded that there is not a simple or unique answer to what is the preferred option – each one of these options should be considered carefully in every situation. Adapting may be the best option if the test under consideration is widely used and easily adapted to the target culture. Developing a local test is more appropriate when the domain under assessment tackles cultural specifics (e.g., language). Finally, “universal” CCTs might provide a basic screening assessment of cognitive functioning in several cultures with minimal adaptation.
