Based on the energy crises experienced in Brazil, initiatives were implemented to reduce, conserve, and improve the use of electric energy in public buildings. The publication of Instruction nº 02/2014 by the Ministério do Planejamento, Orçamento e Gestão – MPOG made it mandatory to obtain the “A” (maximum) rating of the Etiqueta Nacional de Conservação de Energia – ENCE for projects and construction sites in the sphere of the Federal Public Administration. As a procedure for obtaining this standard, existing projects or buildings should be submitted for analysis and classification of their energy efficiency using the methods provided in Instrução Normativa Inmetro para a Classificação de Eficiência Energética de Edificações Comerciais, de Serviços e Públicas - INI-C. This research aimed to analyze the potential for expanding the energy efficiency of the envelope of a public educational building model by proposing strategies to improve its performance. For the case study, an architectural model was elaborated with the characteristics and physical properties of the constructive elements commonly adopted by the Universidade Federal de Alfenas - Unifal-MG. Using the simplified method provided in the regulations, the envelope of the model was classified with level “A” of efficiency. Although its classification obtained the highest level, improvement strategies were proposed aiming at a reduction of the total thermal load of refrigeration to enhance its efficiency. The strategies addressed interventions in the glazing of the openings, in the roof, in the external walls and the angle of vertical shading. By adopting this set of strategies, reductions around 18,36% can be achieved in relation to the thermal loads calculated for the basic model.en
