dc.description.abstract | When we finished the monograph on the conclusion of a course in Speech Therapy that
dealt with the parents' difficulties in receiving diagnosis of the deafness of the child, we
identified the need to better understand some aspects that were not clarified at that moment.
In the face of the findings of that research, we have opened a new space, now in the Master
in Language Sciences, to deepen the reflections about the (in)visibility of the parents in the
process of language acquisition of the deaf child, as a work proposal in the Brazilian deaf
education. Thus, our objective was to analyze the parents' report on the fulfillment of their
demands to understand the role they can play in the process of language acquisition in the
bilingual perspective, which can affect the communication and learning of the deaf child. We
adopt as theoretical reference Capovilla; Guarinello; Glat; Lacerda; Mannoni; Quadros;
Rego; Santana; Vygotsky, among others. We chose qualitative, descriptive research as a
way of approach. Data collection was composed of ten (10) reports of parents, distributed as
follows: five (05) reports of parents of deaf students from a public school in the city of Recife
and five (05) reports from parents of a group of deaf studies, which takes place at a
university in Recife. We selected a semi-structured interview as an instrument of data
collection. Data analysis was inspired by Bardin and his content analysis. The results have
shown that this invisibility of the parents exists, especially when it comes to misinformation
about bilingualism, adopted option in Brazil for the education of the deaf, in addition to its
contribution not being valued to work with professionals and deaf children. In this way, we
were able to provide opportunities to make them participants by identifying their demands.
We hope that this work will contribute to a new look of speech therapists about the needs of
the parents of deaf people, making them more visible since the communication of the
diagnosis of deafness of the child. | eng |
