This research proposes a reflection upon the codes of the representation of reality on the audiovisual production practice, with a focus on the context of the documentary genre and its relation with the animation support. Throughout the research, I approach the characteristics of the historical development of the documentary genre, seeking to expose the historical processes and their consequences on the establishment of a classic documentary tradition. Then, I observe films that surpass this traditional model, exploring their themes while expliciting the subjectivity of the author and of the support, observing the interaction between the documentary practice and different animation techniques, characteristics that blend together in an animated documentary. Along this path, I analyze the characteristics of the procedures commonly used by the live action documentaries and by animated documentaries. I also explore the concepts of representation and reality, intending to observe the influence of the subjectivity, of filmic reality and of realism on the representation of the reality by the cinema. These concepts and themes are applied to the analysis of three films: Guaxuma (2018) by Nara Normande; Persepolis (2008), by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud; and Tower (2017), by Nádia Mangolinien
