dc.description.abstract | To explore the association between occupational stress and general obesity in a sample of working women in shifts in southern Brazil. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 448 shifting women from a group of industries located in southern Brazil (metropolitan region of Porto Alegre / RS). All women with BMI ≥ 30.0 kg / m2 (Body Mass Index - calculated by dividing body mass measured in kilograms by height measured in square meters) were classifies as obese. The evaluation of occupational stress exposure was obtained through the "Jobs Stress Scale". Poisson regression with robust variance was use to obtain the prevalence ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). All analyzes are stratified by work shift. Results: The prevalence of general obesity in the sample was 28.6% (95% CI: 24.4 - 32.7), while occupational stress was identified in 24.1% (95% CI: 20.0 - 28.0). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a significant association was fiend between occupational stress and general obesity among the workers who performed their activities during the night shift. The presence of occupational stress increased the probability of occurrence of obesity in this group of workers by 58% (PR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.00-2.48, p = 0.048). Workers exposed to occupational stress and night work were more likely to have general obesity. | en |
