The present study had as its main objective to promote an educational action on service to users in psychological distress for nurses of the mental health care network in the city of Caxias do Sul. This is a descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out in the Units of Family Health Strategy (FHS) of Caxias do Sul. For this research, two important moments were chosen. At the first moment 22 nurses were interviewed using an instrument with semi-structured questions. In the second moment an educational action was carried out for all nurses in the mental health care network. The interviews resulted in categories that were analyzed and discussed during the study. In the study results, the participants demonstrated knowledge of the flow of care and referrals of users in psychological distress; however, despite a wide network in the provision of care to mental health users, it was observed that the majority opted for traditional methods of mental health care centered on the care of the physician, specialists and the use of medications. Also, that nurses have difficulty using the available resources. Nurses are concerned about their training and updating, since most of them have more than one specialization; nevertheless, they do not show interest in seeking more knowledge for mental health work. The nurses reported that they do not feel prepared to provide qualified care in mental health, either because they do not like to work with this demand or because they do not feel capable of solving the patient in psychological suffering. It is concluded that the Permanent Health Education Center (NEPS) has an important role with nurses, to promote training, updates and programs of permanent health education that will heal and assist nurses in the face of the difficulties they have in their daily lives of work. In this way, they find in the resources available in the Network of Mental Health Care a more qualified and resolutive assistance for the mental health user in psychological distress.en
