dc.description.abstract | To review available papers in literature that have evaluated the consumption of the protein extract of white kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in the reduction of body weight. Data base were PubMed, Cochrane Library and Scielo and were consulted until April 2012. Research terminology used was Phaseolus vulgaris and body weight. Studies have shown that alpha-amylase inhibitor present in white kidney beans protein delays the absorption of carbohydrate, which could contribute to body weight reduction. Several clinical studies have described that Phaseolus vulgaris reduces weight in overweight subjects, serum levels triglycerides and glucose and anthropometric markers as waist circumference and fat mass. The dosage necessary to promote the described effects ranges from 500 to 3000mg, but there is still no consensus about this. The consumption of white kidney beans protein is associated with body weight reduction but there is no concensus about dosage. | en |
