This article discusses the practice of alarm management, its positive effects on process safety incidents prevention, as well as the decisive role of the console operator and its importance to business continuity, adding security in decision-making in routine situations or operational emergencies. It describes the evolution of technologies for the generation of alarms, their effects on human behavior and its influences on accident prevention. The alarm management, implemented properly, is in line with expectations to add greater human reliability in industrial processes through commands and organized and efficient decisions from the operator console. The methodologies used in this article are presented in the forms of literatures searches, experiences of the author and field interviews with console operators.
