In a context of growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in organizations ICT play an increasingly important role in key strategic areas. Within this context of inclusion of a large number of new technologies and systems in organizations, a need for proper management of these resources to achieve the goals and objectives of the companies is noticed. In the same way that private companies need to have these concerns the public sphere has also followed the same trend, since from the 80s there was an exponential growth in ICT use in this area, emerging the necessity to concern about the management and governance of these tools to support government actions. The adoption of these technologies in public companies can support various issues such as improvement of administrative processes, the provision of public services and social participation through electronic governance practices (e-gov). In order to manage these technologies, the need to develop IT governance mechanisms to support the use of these technologies strategically and aligned with the goals of the institutions took place. As such, the objective of this study is to test how the Information Technology Governance in DETRAN / RS occurs. The DMV / RS is an autarchy of the State Executive Authority that monitors, manages and executes the transit of vehicles in their respective jurisdictions, within the Brazilian territory. In order to perform this study, a qualitative research of exploratory nature was conducted through semi-structured interviews with Directors, Advisors, Heads, Managers and Servers. The results show that the organization needs a strategic planning, the use of good practices and GTI arrangements in aid of control and alignment of IT (Information Technology) to its goals. The research suggests that is implanted in the institution a GTI committee for managing its projects. The study identified that the public organization is dependent on the service provider (PROCERGS) in the implementation and deployment of its projects, but do not have an IT planning. Moreover, it allowed to identify that all respondents recognized the importance of using good GTI practices in the institution.en
