The aim of the study is to explain the political and ideological positions sustained by the Jornal do Nuances, a communication medium produced, since 1998, by a NGO devoted to the defense of the human rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites, and transsexuals living in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The study was oriented by the theory of the alternative/radical media. It was concluded that the Jornal do Nuances expresses the political impasses existing in the Brazilian homosexual movement as a whole, which are a result of the growing visibility achieved by the above mentioned individuals. With its polemical themes and political positions, the referred journal celebrates and defends the “bicha bafona” at the expenses of the “middle class gay”.en
