Objective: To determine the relationship between the mental health of young students at a private university in Cali and their engagement in leisure activities during the return to in-person learning in times of COVID-19. Method: This was a non-experimental, cross-sectional correlational quantitative study involving 2027 undergraduate students from a private university in Cali, Colombia. The participants completed the Health and Wellbeing Survey, Student Version, which analyzed two variables: "mental health" and "leisure time." Results: The university students exhibited high levels of negative mental health indicators, ranging from mild to very severe in depression, anxiety, and stress, and from medium to high in loneliness. Conversely, in terms of positive mental health indicators, most participants showed a high level of resilience and a medium level of psychological well-being. Regarding leisure time, a large percentage of participants engaged in solo entertainment, group entertainment, physical activities, and cultural/artistic activities. Students who engaged in leisure activities had lower levels of negative mental health indicators and higher levels of positive indicators compared to those who did not engage in such activities. Conclusions: Most university students who engaged in leisure activities during the return to in-person learning in times of COVID-19 exhibited higher levels of positive mental health indicators and lower levels of negative mental health indicators, with significant differences observed.
