This research aimed at analyzing the motivation of university students during the use of Game-Based Learning (GBL) in terms of four aspects: perception of achievement, perception of challenge, ability, and relevance. This is a mixed study with a double reach: correlational on the one hand, since a statistical analysis was carried out from the Emergent Motivation Questionnaire (CME) applied to 20 undergraduate students of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in order to identify the relationships between four aspects: perception of achievement, perception of challenge, ability and relevance, which according to the Flow theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 2010) converge in motivation. On the other hand, descriptive, given that a thematic analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews was carried out whose purpose was to characterize factors involved in the motivation of students during the GBL articulating this information with the quantitative results of the CME. It was found that most of the motivation variables increase in their average scores during the game and decrease at the end, depending on the outcome of the game. The significative experience is associated with collaborative work, strategy development, instructional support from the teacher, level of relevance and applicability at a personal and professional level perceived by the learning and achievements obtained thanks to the game. The analysis showed that all the evaluated factors are boosted and increased, evidencing a simultaneous improvement among them, concluding that motivation is presented in a changing, subjective, and contextualized way in university students when participating in GBL.
