UNAM-FES Acatlán - Universidad Iberoamericana, MéxicoA través de una lectura atenta de algunos pasajes del Ensayo sobre el entendimiento humano, el presente estudio analiza la manera en que el filósofo empirista John Locke, al tratar de desterrar a la retórica y la figuración de todo discurso con pretensiones epistemológicas, termina construyendo una “retórica de la antiretórica”. Paradójicamente, mientras se esfuerza en excluir a la metáfora, más metafórico se vuelve su discurso, más empuje tiene los modelos figurativos en su consideración sobre el conocimiento y la verdad.
Through a careful reading of some passages of the Essay on Human Understanding, this study analyzes the way in which the empiricist philosopher John Locke, trying to banish rhetoric and figuration from all discourse with epistemological pretensions, ends up constructing a “Rhetoric of anti-rhetoric”. Paradoxically, as he strives to exclude metaphor, the more metaphorical his discourse becomes, the more thrust figurative models have in his consideration of knowledge and truth.
