This is a research about the perception of the Guidance Counsellor job through the teacher’s understanding at the elementar school, at public and private schools in the region of Porto Alegre, from qualitative type with a methodological approach of case study. The research instrumental were 12 (twelve) demo-structured questionaries that were answered by elementar school’s teachers from that region. The theorical framework was based upon Cortella (2014), Giacaglia and Penteado (2015), Miranda (2009), Relvas; Metring and Sampaio (2016), Theodoro and Karnal (2015), Tardiff (2002), Vasconcellos (2009), Veiga (2013), Vieira (2016), as well as, upon the Guidelines and Bases for National Education (1996), Children and Adolecences Statute (1990), Brazilian Federal Constitution (1998) among others. As result from this research highlight that elementar school teachers from the researched region consider the Guindance Counsellor as an importante funcion, however they do not know what are the actual assignments of the post. Teachers limit the Guindence Councellors as a profissional that corrects and disciplines behavior of the students and forwards them to another external professionals from outside of school. It is important that the person in charge of Guidance of public and private school of the region improves his/her knowledge and information about laws governing this function in order to act in the teaching and learning effectively.
