This master's thesis is part of the Umbrella Project, a multicenter, international research network, proposed by UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte) owned by Prof. doctor Gilson de Vasconcelos Torres. This research has the general objective of analyzing the association between family functionality and sociodemographic and health conditions of the elderly. More specifically: 1) identify sociodemographic and health conditions; 2) check family functionality; 3) show through the field diary how they perceive the family functionality. The target population was 30 people from 60 years of age, registered in the Primary Care Health Services of the SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) in Recife/PE, who live with family members, from a less favored social class, regardless of gender. , race, education level, profession, marital status and religion. For the data collection procedure, the following instruments were used: Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Field diary, Questionnaire with sociodemographic and health data and the Family APGAR. About the data analysis procedure: the quantitative part was organized and analyzed using the Statistical Software Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 23.0. And the qualitative part, through the Thematic Content Analysis Technique, consisting of pre-analysis, exploration of the material, treatment of the results obtained and interpretation. Main results: 1) Regarding sociodemographic variables, the following predominated: females (90%); black and mixed race (63.3%); marital status without a partner (60.7%); education level, literate (81.5%); religion (100%), Protestants (86.6%), other Christians; profession, those that required a lower level of education (96.7%); current work situation, retired (53.6%) or pensioner (14.3%); 29 live with relatives (96.7%); family income, up to one minimum wage (58.6%). 2) With regard to health conditions, the following prevailed: felt pain in the body in the last week (73.3%); they had chronic diseases (100%); most with arterial hypertension (80.8%), followed by diabetes (26.9%); most using medication (90%). 3) Regarding family functionality, of the 30 (thirty) elderly people interviewed, 27 (twenty-seven) had family dysfunction. Final considerations: the Corona Virus Pandemic prevented a greater number of interviews, consequently a smaller number of participants and only 3 (three) male elderly people. In this sense, it is urgent to deepen this study through new research, also considering other locations, including less privileged neighborhoods in the city (without beaches and shopping malls nearby). Moreover, it is expected from the results, to give social and scientific visibility to the importance of studying the association between family functionality, sociodemographic conditions and health of the elderly person; provide theoretical and practical subsidies to professionals who work with the elderly and families, especially with the theme; and, propose strategies, protocols and care plans aimed at better quality of life and dignified and active aging for the elderly.eng
