| dc.description | Health and illness are human-interest concepts since the ancient times throughout our evolution as a species. During prehistory, evidence of trepanation suggests the existence of early conceptions and practices concerning the body and mental health. In the ancient cultures, such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks, these processes were associated with beliefs about infl uences of external spiritual entities and even demons over the mind and the body. The Greeks and Romans added new concepts to the medical practice, although several ancient precepts subsisted. Change in the frames of reference fi nally leads to the emergence of health psychology. The main objective of this article is to explore the evolution of the concepts of health and disease, reviewing its main variants with an emphasis on the old formulations. The approach taken is descriptive and based on the study of primary and secondary sources, predominantly the latter, in an attempt to differentiate the characteristics of the pre-scientifi c stage of psychology with current conceptions. | en-US |
| dc.description | Los conceptos relacionados a la salud y la enfermedad están en el interés humano desde épocas muy antiguas en nuestro desarrollo como especie. Durante la prehistoria, las evidencias de trepanación indican concepciones tempranas de prácticas relacionadas a la salud. En las culturas antiguas, como los asirios, babilonios, egipcios y griegos, estos procesos se asociaron a creencias sobre infl uencias de entes espirituales externos y demonios sobre la mente y el cuerpo. Los griegos y romanos agregaron nuevos conceptos a la práctica médica, aunque varios de los antiguos preceptos subsistieron. El cambio en los marcos de referencia condujo finalmente hacia el más novel campo de la psicología de la salud. El principal objetivo de esta comunicación se concentra en repasar la evolución de las nociones de salud y enfermedad, a partir de sus variantes principales con énfasis en las antiguas formulaciones. El enfoque adoptado es descriptivo y se fundamenta en el estudio de fuentes primarias y secundarias, predominando estas últimas, en un intento por diferenciar las características propias de la etapa precientífi ca de la psicología de las concepciones actuales. | es-ES |
