This research addresses the school management, the quality of education and the tackling of social inequality in public schools and its main objective is to analyze school management from the perspective of practices aimed at tackling social inequality at school and at the process of improving the quality of education. With a methodology based on qualitative research, case studies based on interviews, field diary records and document analysis are used. Developed in the empiric field that encompasses municipal schools in the public education network of Maceió, in the Alagoas State, this research presents the study focused on the relevance of school management in the current educational context of standardizing the quality of education in the situation of social inequality present in public schools. This study also discusses the articulation between the education plans in the three governmental bodies and the contributions directed both to the qualification of education and to social inequality. According to the data and analyzes carried out, the alignment of educational plans with relevance to the results of IDEB and on indicators for tackling inequality stands out. Also, school management practices aimed at meeting demands towards the increasing averages in the set of elements that make up IDEB are relevant. The results of the research indicate that school management is a pillar of the development of educational policies, with emphasis on the mediation of school relations; highlight the tackling of social inequality reflected in the practices aimed at the immediate attendance of basic needs identified in the school environment and in addressing measures to the needs of an extended nature to other public bodies, whose functions are inherent in solving the social problem presented through the school; and identify practices committed to the responsibility of articulating school processes, following the democratic management model, to improve the quality of education offered by the public school. Another important data is related to the service in relation to the demands of the local management agency, which indicates overload and accountability of school management.en
