Currently, as the global market is becoming increasingly competitive, companies tend to continually look for management methods that make them more effective and profitable. In this environment, the organizations’ ability to manage the balance between product availability and inventory becomes an important aspect to consider in order to improve companies’ competitiveness. Several companies around the world adopt many practices to plan their operations, aiming to achieve a higher performance level, although not always with the desired success. In this context, it is relevant to highlight that agricultural machinery industry has a fundamental strategic importance for world´s industrial development, due to its economic and technological repercussions that tend to influence almost all industrial segments. Thus, the present study aims to develop a diagnostic model that allows to evaluate the adherence degree between what is implemented in practice by the focal companies of the agricultural machinery industry, and the elements originated from the theoretical concepts that feature the Production Tactical Planning process. Regarding to the methodology, an applied nature research was taken, qualitative and exploratory, using as technical procedure the case study. The research proposes knowledge building, through a diagnostic model, based on a bibliographical material research, and improved through professionals knowledge specialized in mid-term production planning. Therefore, with the results obtained it is possible to conclude that the developed diagnostic model and its tools compose a mechanism to support the focal companies that are agricultural equipment manufacturers, in order to achieve a more robust and structured Production Tactical Planning process. Finally, consequently this tends to potentialize their search for a dynamic balance between: i) product availability; (ii) inventory levels; and (iii) operational stability.en
