The National Emergency Department Overcrowding Score (NEDOCS) is an easy-to-apply tool that enables the verification of emergency service (SE) manning levels and favors the construction of future change planning with a view to reducing over-crowding and residence times. This study is part of the Project “Nursing Research and Intervention: Systematization of Nursing Care to Strengthen the São Leopoldo / RS Health Network" (PISAE-SL), linked to the Graduate Program Professional Mas-ter in Nursing, Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos - UNISINOS through the CAPES / COFEN 27/2016 Public Notice. Objective: perform the cross-cultural adap-tation to the Portuguese language and validate the NEDOCS scale for use in Brazil. Method: cross-cultural adaptation study for the Portuguese language of Brazil, based on the recommendations of the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures. Results: the methodological steps of initial translation were fulfilled; synthesis of translations; back translation; expert commit-tee; pre-test and submission of the scale to the author. Content validation was per-formed using the Content Validity Index (IVC). The scale was applied through an electronic form in SE, totaling 107 applications by 40 different professionals. To evaluate the association between the scale variables, the Spearman correlation co-efficient was applied. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Analyzes were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Final Considerations: The NEDOCS scale enables the professional to monitor the current situation of SE's. The professional can draw up planning to improve flow and reduce length of stay, which denotes the role of manager in con-ducting the emergency work process. Product: Emergency service manning level measurement scale, whose tool enables the improvement of management process-es, qualifying care and providing health indicators.en
