| dc.description.abstract | This paper aims to analyze, through a trajectory study, how Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil uses the memory of the Farroupilha Revolution to instrumentalize his political / scientist discourse, in order to defend ideas such as republicanism. and federalism, against monarchists, whether conservative or liberal. Assis Brasil is a member of a contesting current of saquarema politics, which implemented a political and social model based on romanticism, liberalism and the Catholic Church. This model, after the Paraguayan War, began to be strongly contested by this generation of which Assis Brasil was part, which became known as the “1870 generation”. Assis Brasil was part of one of the contesting currents, which, speaking of a “repertoire” acquired through the reading of European theorists, developed a perspective for the crisis that had settled in Brazil in the last decades of the nineteenth century. Within this, Assis Brasil manages to form a cultural capital, fruit of its family origins that allowed it to study in good educational institutions, besides its personal relations, and of the social networks that allowed it to write and publish its ideas, being recognized by the peers as one of the most prominent members of this generation. Taking advantage of his verve, Assis Brasil enters the historical-culture dispute over the Farroupilha Revolution, to make it an identity element for his group, aiming to justify the group's practices of contestation to the imperial model, and building an identity that links the republicans of 1835 with those of the 1880s. | en |
