The present research allows us to reflect upon Youth and Adult Education (YAE) , more precisely over the I and II stages, from the first to the fifth year of Elementary School . The main goal to be achieved is to come to know the teaching practices on a mixed level YAE group from a public school in Vale do Rio dos Sinos, starting from: a) analyzing activities carried out in the context of the YAE class that involve the use of language in the process of alphabetization and literacy, verifying how they contribute to the learning of these students; b) identify the students’ impression of the teaching presented; c) analyzing exercises of the textbook used by the group in question, verifying if the developed activities based on this resource contribute to the learning of these students. In order to reach these goals, observations were held, where it was possible to take notes on field and interview both the students and the teachers. There was, also, an analysis of the textbook used by the teachers, based on the guiding documents of YAE. Starting with the premises of Kleiman (1995), Soares (1998, 2003) and Soares (2002, 2003), among other authors, the main findings are in the fact that the teachers seek to contemplate the challenges of YAE with the experiences of the students outside the classroom, promoting alphabetization and literacy. It has been verified that the Textbook includes several activities and suggestions to be explored within YAE groups. It is reinforced that Youth and Adult Education is still a modality of teaching with pre-conceptions that need to be reconsidered. For that to happen, people must be more aware of this education, and its peculiarities must also be valued. It is important to reflect on this teaching modality, which also focuses on the learning of reading and writing of its students, aiming for better life opportunities for them.en
